Millers of Longton provides nationwide UK coverage as well as international recovery and assistance, working in conjunction with a network of approved agents, and is widely regarded as a company that can cope professionally and promptly with almost anything.
At its busy headquarters just off the A59 south of Preston, we meet with business development and contracts manager Chris Van-Son, and company founder John Miller.
“This business has changed a lot in recent years, but it’s built on the strong foundations established by John and Janet Miller from the beginning,” Chris tells us. “We are still on the same site, although it has undergone huge change over the years. And the basic principle of providing the best possible service at a reasonable price remains the same, whether it is a simple repair or major heavy recovery job.

TPH AUTOS HAS COME A LONG WAY IN A SHORT SPACE OF TIME, DEVELOPING A REPUTATION FOR RELIABLE AND EFFECTIVE RECOVERY WORK IN YORKSHIRE OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS. SO HOW HAS IT MANAGED IT?
In just two years since it began vehicle recovery work, TPH Autos has become a familiar presence on the roads of West Yorkshire. Its distinctive red trucks are memorable, and it has developed a reputation for the quality of its work among a growing number of customers.
Tom Hannan (inset), owner and director of the company, is a man who believes that taking calculated risks and working hard will pay off. Tom started out as a mechanic, rising to become a master technician at Harrats Honda in Wakefield. But after working there for a decade, he wanted to branch out and started doing car repairs on the side, working out of a Ford Transit Connect on evenings and weekends.
When Tom went to a local garage in Ossett seven years ago, however, the course of his life really changed. He went there looking for a job, but found the owners were retiring and selling up. Not one to let an opportunity pass by, Tom decided to take on the garage himself.

AS THE INDUSTRY EVOLVES AND SCRUTINY INCREASES, CAPABILITY, EXPERIENCE AND THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT MATTER. WORKING ACROSS RURAL DORSET AND THE WIDER SOUTH WEST,
ASHLEY WOOD RECOVERY OPERATES A FLEET DEVELOPED TO MEET THOSE SPECIFIC DEMANDS.
The range of services any recovery operator provides invariably reflects the potential demand in the areas they cover. This may seem like a statement of the obvious, but it is easy to forget that different parts of the country have wildly different road networks, population densities and potential customer bases. Long‑established Ashley Wood Recovery operates from four depots covering much of Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and Somerset, with its area extending into Devon.
With its head office at Piddlehinton, near Dorchester in rural Dorset, much of the surrounding countryside is farmland interspersed with villages and a small number of larger towns. Ashley Wood Recovery also operates depots near Blandford Forum and Salisbury, both medium‑sized towns and relatively close to the south coast and the two main east–west trunk routes, with the A303 to the north and the A35 to the south. A further depot is located close to the M5 at Taunton.

ACROSS NORTHERN SCOTLAND’S VAST AND VARIED TERRAIN, ROSS COOK TACKLES RECOVERIES FEW OTHERS WOULD RELISH—THE GREATER THE CHALLENGE, THE GREATER THE MOTIVATION. AS DOUGIE RANKINE FINDS OUT
There’s never been a vehicle built that won’t, at some point, need to be recovered. Whether it’s a stranded artic or specialist machinery miles from the nearest road, the requirement is the same: get it moving again.
Exotic and expensive as much of this machinery may be, getting it back where it belongs is non‑negotiable when it ends up somewhere it shouldn’t. More often than not, it’s the same familiar forces—weather, terrain and gravity—that unravel even the best‑laid plans. Fortunately, there are few situations that cannot be resolved with the right combination of skill, experience and engineering know‑how—qualities brought to bear daily by operators like Ross Cook.
“I’d much rather be miles away in a forest than carrying out an on‑road recovery,” says Ross. “Everyone’s different, but working away from the road is what I enjoy most.”
